Macon, Georgia. Home to the ancient Ocmulgee National Monument, Wesleyan University, and the Allman Brothers. It is a Southern haven for soul food, cherry blossoms, and Native American history. It also is emerging as a hub for craft beer, making the city a go-to travel destination when combined with such a rich culture. I’ll leave the historic sight-seeing tips to the experts… instead, here are my Top 4 craft beer and brewpubs that are must-visits in Macon, Georgia.
With the sticky heat subsiding, Fall is the best time to plan a trip to the South. There is personally nothing more relaxing than ending a busy day of Autumn sight-seeing with a crisp craft beer. Macon’s emerging craft beer and brewpub scene is a fitting element to the city’s historic architecture and vibrant college atmosphere. And with a complimentary farm-to-table restaurant revolution in the works, this quaint Southern town is on the track to securing a spot in annals of gastro-travel. So as you traverse the city’s gorgeous streets, be sure to stop by these four locations for a unique brew and some equally becoming grub.
Lauded as Middle Georgia’s only gastropub, this trendy bar serves up a variety of on-tap specialty ales and gourmet fare. A mixture of European and American pub style cuisine, the tavern offers a variety of unique dishes: Guiness Beer & Chorizo Sloppy Joe, Kickin’ Bourbon Wings, Szechuan Salmon, and the like. As for drinks, the Bearfoot Tavern offers over 50 beers on tap. The amazing selection ranges from local Georgia drafts like the Macon Progress Pale Ale to craft drafts hailing from California to Delaware. In addition, the tavern boasts a relaxing beer garden with weekly live music. So put on your scarf, order the best on tap, and enjoy some local music in the Autumn sun.
#3: Piedmont Brewery & Kitchen
Looking to wet your whistle and have a little fun during your Macon, Georgia visit? Then Piedmont Brewery & Kitchen is your place. This brewpub boasts a hearty selection of handcrafted beers, honest food, and it even has an urban arcade. For the beer connessiur, the bar has 7 beers on tap that pour directly from the brite tanks located on the premises. The selection is always changing, with a regular rotation of seasonal and one-off style brews as well. The kitchen takes the brewpub to the next level with dishes like Brisket Banh Mi and Grit Fritters. Best of all, you can order your beer and take it downstairs to their urban arcade featuring vintage video games, skee-ball, bocce, and more.
Looking for something a bit casual, but still high in quality? Then you’ll want to rest your wanderlusting feet while you sip on a pint from Just Tap’d. With a Seattle Coffee House atmosphere, this easy-going pub’s craft beer selection is nothing to shirk at. They have over 60 craft beers from around the nation available, with most accompanied by a prestigious award. This is the serious beer drinker’s bar with all the pretentiousness stripped away. Add to the authenticity by ordering from the traditional British pub menu and you have yourself one delicious, easy-going night in Macon.
Coming in at #1 is the Macon Beer Company… because seriously, how could I not?! You know when brewers name their brewery after their hometown, they plan to do their city proud. The Macon Beer Company is an expert in high quality craft brewing. While their flagship brew, Macon Progress, is available year round, the company offers up seasonal brews specifically designed to celebrate Macon itself. For instance, Macon Bears is a specialty pumpkin ale released seasonally to kick off fall and football season. Best of all, their taproom is located on the brewery premises in historic downtown Macon. So you can take a tour and then grab a crafted brew afterwards.
So make sure to add these four craft beer and brewpub stops to your Macon, Georgia itinerary. For more fun ideas to plan your trip, visit the city’s tourism site here.
