If you’re lucky enough to have a house with a basement, then you may be wondering what exactly to use it for. Until now, it could have been used as that room where everything just gets stored, which is fine, but after a while that starts to become like a bit of a waste of a perfectly good room and just another excuse to keep holding on to old junk that you probably no longer need, use, or want.

So, in this post, we’re going to share with you some of the creative ways that you can finally start to make the most of your basement and turn it into a space that you actually enjoy spending your time in.

Study/Library:

If you’re something of a bookworm then you’ve probably fantasized about having your very own library – a sanctuary full of your favourite books written by amazing authors, and a nice comfortable couch where you can lounge around on a rainy day with a cup of green tea and just forget the world for a while. You could also take things to the next level and turn it into a combined study and library if you wanted, so you could find a place to just read books or catch up on things like admin in a peaceful environment and also have a designated place to keep everything. You can find plenty of things like bookcases and study furniture online, so it’s really not as expensive as you might think to put this together.

Office:

If anyone in your house works from home, then turning your basement into an office could be the perfect use for the space. You can easily create a nice home office on a budget, and the benefit of having the office in the basement is that it’s going to be away from the main noise of the house, so it’s a great space to use for things like calls, focused working, or even meetings if necessary. You can find plenty of ideas and inspiration on places like Pinterest.

Cinema:

Who wouldn’t love to have their own cinema right in the house without having to go outside? Most people, that’s who. Whether it’s just you and your partner or you have kids, you’re definitely going to find a cinema to be a great use for your basement – plus, it’s going to be a conversation starter, and will absolutely add some value to your house should you ever decide to sell it. To really bring that cinema atmosphere alive, you can add things like your own popcorn and soda machines and even get some good sound system to really finish it off.

Bar:

If a bar is more your thing instead of going to the cinema, then turning your basement into your very own bar could be a brilliant way to use up the space – plus, it’s going to be perfect for entertaining people during parties, etc. The best thing about this bar is, it’s going to be totally exclusive,  there’s no risk of trouble, and you don’t have to worry about last orders until you call them. You can go for a more rustic bar look with something like Reclaimed Wood Paneling, or you could opt for a contemporary look with things like glass and tiles. No matter what look you’re after, there are certainly no shortage of ideas available online when it comes to the different ways you can decorate your home bar, and you can find really cool pieces of furniture, decor and accessories to really create your dream bar at home – whether that’s beautiful bar stools, a retro jukebox, or even a cocktail shaker to delight your guests with.

Man/Woman Cave:

The concept of the man cave has really been catching on in the last few years, and now there’s even the woman cave. So, if you live with a partner you may have to flip a coin for this one or even come to some kind of agreement on how to use the room, a man or woman cave could be a great use of space that could really give you. The great thing about a man or woman cave is that it can basically be whatever you want it to be. Want it to be a place where you hang out with your friends and drink beer? Totally fine – or do you want a place where you can use things like healing crystals and listen to meditation music? Also fine, there are no rules when it comes to the man or woman cave, which is probably one of the reasons they’ve become so popular. Of course, if you’re stuck for ideas for your man or woman cave, then you can find plenty of ideas and examples online to give you a good bit of inspiration.

Craft/Hobby Room:

If you do any kind of crafts or hobbies – or especially if you have kids who like to do things like painting, scrapbooking or other things that can be quite messy, but that kids should be doing, then turning your basement into a crafts or hobby room could be a great idea. This means, not only will there be a place to keep all the mess from being dragged around the house, but it’s also a great place to store all the craft materials – especially things like stickers, glue and pens, which can be quite messy and that you can often find lying around the house in small corners.

Game Room:

If none of the above options work for you or interest you, then you could still go with the all-time classic option and turn your basement into a game room. This is typically seen as something that only men would enjoy, but actually it’s really something that everyone, including the kids can enjoy. You can have things like a pool table, a dart board, or even adult games like beer pong – really whatever you want to include in your game room can basically be bought online. Many people even look for things like vintage game machines such as Pac-Man, which you’d be surprised are actually pretty easy to come across – of course, they’re generally not going to be the cheapest, but they’re actually worth quite a bit of money, so if you take good care of them, you could sell them at some point if you wanted and make a good bit back.

We hope that this post was helpful and showed you that there are really plenty of options when it comes to deciding what to do with your basement and that it doesn’t have to be used simply as a junk storage room.

These are only some of the many options that you can use to come up with creative ways to use your basement, and you can find so many other ideas online or you can even just use this as a building block and create something completely unique for yourself that matches with your lifestyle.

A good place to start looking for ideas for your basement renovation would be Pinterest or even Instagram since you can find a lot of great images on there that will really give you inspiration and help you envision what your basement could look like when finished, so this will really help you find something that you love. You can also save the images you like best, which is going to be helpful when going out shopping for the accessories, decor, and furniture for your basement project. Happy designing!
