Styling an Italian Dessert Table

Children’s parties often come with themes: Lego, Mermaid, Dinosaur, Disney’s Tangled (3 years in a row!). But as we get older, this time-honored childhood tradition fads away. Why can’t adult parties come with themes? Sure you’ll have a murder-mystery or costume party pop up now and again, but they’re few and far between. An adult party theme can be much more subtle. Think of a favorite foodie region and BOOM! You have a party theme, my friends. Take for example, this stunning affair in the Shenandoah Valley. It is a beautiful display of how you can carry out a foodie theme in a very mature way. Italian food is the theme and it is carried out in gorgeously detailed perfection in the Italian dessert table. Photographer Katelyn Kirkpatrich of Awe Captures photography breaks down sweets:

Italians don’t typically have wedding cake for dessert, they only incorporate sugar coated almonds. So I decided to include the almonds as favors in sachets and offer a variety of Italian desserts from ladyfingers, to biscottis, cannollis, and pizzelles. Because the dinner is family style and includes several courses, the dessert was set up casual, so guests can serve themselves.

The Grand Reserve Inn is a new wedding venue in the middle of Shenandoah Valley, a place surrounded by vineyards, trails and simplicity. This new establishment with 5 luxury suites, a grand courtyard, cozy fireplaces and an extraordinary vineyard view inspired us to create a styled wedding shoot that brings out the Italian elements that can be incorporated into any wedding. Italians prefer almonds over wedding cake! Orange and blue accentuate the spring colors and create a warm, historical but modern touch to this creation. I’d describe the dining and ceremony areas as casual but sophisticated. Self- service dessert and wine bars, local olive oil as favors emphasize the simple but thoughtful approach towards the guests.

A few styling takeaways… display the desserts on everything from cake stands, tiered dessert trays, and plates. Just make sure that the display pieces compliment each other in style and color. In addition, a great way to carry out a theme is by making sure feature desserts that compliment each other in style and color as well. Lastly, add some greens to the table through stems, flowers, or fruit. Whether its a wedding, birthday celebration, or dinner party, you can incorporate a foodie theme throughout the night with the dessert table at its centerpiece!
