Pet peeves. We all have them. Nails on a chalkboard. Hundreds of unopened emails in your inbox. Someone replying to your text by calling you instead. They’re liable to make you go insane. Mine is food-related, of course. I can’t stand it when a brand labels their food as having some novel flavor, but it actually doesn’t. For example, champagne-flavored truffles. If I can’t detect a hint of bubbly, then I will go all-out Miranda Priestly on you… CHAMPAGNE! Where’s my champagne?! You’re not going to Paris! And don’t get me started on the Sriracha-flavored potato chips without a hint of spice whatsoever. Ugh, it makes me irrationally angry. So, when I recently heard of rosé cider, I barely raised a snooty eyebrow. Really cider houses? We’ll have to see about that. I promptly went out and purchased myself the only two rosé ciders on the market, offered respectively by Crispin Cider Co. and Angry Orchard. Would they live up to the hype? Would they make me furiously pop a blood vessel in my eye? Would they send me on a rose-colored cosmic trip through the space-time continuum? It’s time to find out. This is Rosé Cider Wars: Crispin versus Angry Orchard!
Let’s start with Crispin Rosé Cider. I personally prefer the packaging on this bottle to that of Angry Orchard. It’s sleek, sweet, and sophisticated. It looks like a drink for a proper adult who says stuff like “Let’s do brunch at the clubhouse”. The color of the drink was more muted than Angry Orchard’s, but then again that added to the elegance of the overall presentation. Millennials will lose it over this shade of pink, if you know what I’m saying. Upon sipping, very little aroma was given off and the flavor was extremely mild. So mild, in fact, I could barely taste the cider. And as for the Rosé? If I’m being honest, I couldn’t taste it at all. Quite the disappointment, since I am a fan of Crispin in general. All in all, the Crispin Rosé Cider was a gorgeously-presented mild cider… but it has earned a place in my pet-peeve archive!
Next up, Angry Orchard Rosé Cider. I’m personally not a big fan of the Lord of the Rings-esque branding they’ve got going. However, Angry Orchard always produces a quality cider, so I am willing to overlook the presentation. As for the liquid color, it’s a bit more vibrant than that of a typical rosé wine, but I wouldn’t expect a wine and cider to look identical. So I’m not going to hold the color against them either. Upon pouring, the drink gives off a lovely sweet aroma that gets you excited to sip. And oh my goodness, it tastes fantastic. Completely different from a typical cider, it has a distinctive rosé wine flavor and a hint of pear on your palette. It presents as a very sweet drink overall (as you’d expect from a good cider) and gives you the impression you’re drinking a rosé-cider hybrid.
The Winner? Angry Orchard!
I hate to pick sides, but Angry Orchard’s Rosé Cider clearly takes the prize on this one. You’re getting a lot more flavor for your money and it actually does hint at a bubbly glass of rosé wine. It’s so flavorful, in fact, that it makes Crispin’s Rosé taste like flavored water. Sorry Crispin, you dropped the ball on this one. Angry Orchard wins the Rosé Cider Wars!
