Summer has officially begun and for my wine glasses that can only mean one thing… Rosé. It’s perfectly light for the sweltering weather, has a refreshingly fruity palate, and gosh-dang-it rosé is so damn pretty! With all that said, over the next few months I will be featuring some of my top picks for best summer rosés. First up: Mathilde Chapoutier’s 2016 Côtes de Provence Grand Ferrage Rosé. Whew, that was a mouthful. Let’s get to know the bottle a little better, shall we?
This wine is the brain child of an eighth generation wine maker. Mathilde Chapoutier is the 24-year-old (yes, 24!) ancestral entrepreneur behind the gorgeous rosé. Her young adult life was spent traveling the world, earning a business degree, and becoming Chief of Strategy and Business Development for the Chapoutier group. Taking on this critical role in her family’s company has given her the opportunity to expand their wine’s 200-year-old narrative. Thus, she created the Côtes de Provence Grand Ferrage Rosé to represent her role in the winery’s history – adventurous, unpretentious, and fun. Did I already mention she is only 24?! Um yeah, it’s about this time in the write-up that I start feeling really cruddy about my accomplishments. Well, the good thing about disappointment and regret… there’s wine for that! Here are the tasting notes and bottle information…
TASTING
Color: Clear pale pink with purple highlights.
Nose: Complex aromas of peach, citrus, and exotic fruit.
Mouth: Full and delicious on entry to the palate, followed by notes of peach and apricot, underpinned by a structured acidity for the perfect finish.
VINTAGE 2016
Grape: Grenache noir, Cinsault, Syrah, and Rolle
Soil: Clay-limestone
Harvest: Carried out at night, by machine. This keeps the grapes as fresh as possible.
Winemaking: Short, cold maceration on the skin, followed by direct pressing. The grapes are protected
against oxygen during this process to preserve the aromatic precursors. Fermentation at low temperature.
Maturing: 5 months in stainless
Alcohol degree: 12.5%
Pair this beauty with some cold watermelon on the patio or a BBQ chicken meal and you have yourself a perfect summer’s evening. Special thanks to our friends at Terlato Wine for sharing this bottle with me!
