As the leaves change color and the wind gets a chill, it is time to bring out your favorite warming items. Now most people envision cozy wool socks, a flannel blanket, blazing fire, and a cup of something hot to hug your soul. I will admit, that’s pretty much my perfect Autumn list… but with one tiny change. Alcohol. I’m not saying you should have a glass of booze in lieu of a steamy mug of warm goodness. No. I’m saying pour some libations in that mug and life will be a whole lot warmer.

Take for instance today’s recipe. The first time I mixed up a batch of my now (scrumptiously) infamous “Earl’s Tea” cocktails, my audience looked on with trepidation. Hard liquor in my tea?! Oh yes, my friends! It is not a mainstream idea, but oh-so-good. It has all the comfort of your favorite tea on a cold day, with all the kick of booze heating your heart and fogging your mind. Now I say the idea is not ‘mainstream’ because this concept is pretty much non-existent in our current socially acknowledged drinking standards. But, it actually was a quite common practice in the 1700s. Think about it… why wouldn’t they regularly put booze in the most consumed product of the era?!

Besides a quality tea and Fall spices, I have chosen Cavalry Bourbon Whiskey as the star of this event. Let me tell you from experience, this bourbon is good! A mixture of corn, rye, and barley malt is aged for 4 months in New American Oak casks, giving Cavalry a rich, smooth, and delightfully complex flavor. Perfect for adding to your Autumn tea. And hey, if bourbon in your tea is just too wild for your traditional sentiments, then pour yourself a hearty glass of Cavalry and send me a ‘thank you’ note. And no, ‘thank you’ notes are not antiquated… they’re good manners.

THE EARL’S TEA

INGREDIENTS

  1. 1 Earl Gray tea bag
  2. 2 ounces of Cavalry Bourbon Whiskey
  3. 1 tablespoon of sugar
  4. 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg
  5. Dash of vanilla extract
  6. Whole cloves (garnish)
  7. Milk (to taste)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Seep the Earl Gray in boiling hot water in a tea cup for 4 minutes.
  2. Add all of the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Stir well and enjoy while it’s hot!
