A few years ago, I vacationed with my husband in Hawaii. You would think that my most valued memories from that trip would be the quality time spent with my wonderful husband on the beach or one of our many romantic hikes in the jungle. But no, what stands out to me the most, like a beacon of delicious light in the haze of foggy memories, was the Ahi tuna. I had it at every restaurant we ate at during our trip. I was obsessed. Yup, clearly you see where my priorities in life lie. Since that fateful trip, I have been on a foodie quest to recreate the incomparable Maui Ahi Tuna, but to no avail. Every time I try to prepare the dish myself, I either undercook or overcook the fish. It’s such a temperamental dish to prepare, that I’ve all but given up chasing after that magical fish. I was content to let it live out it’s days in perfection on the island of Maui. So, I’ll be honest that I was a little more than skeptical when I was approached to review Bumble Bee SuperFresh® Seared Ahi Tuna. A frozen, ready-to-eat seared Ahi tuna?! Oh, okay Bumble Bee. Bring it! I followed the super easy directions on the box, which literally consisted of removing it from the freezer and it’s packaging and then letting it thaw in the refrigerator for 3 hours. Took my first bite and was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty good. The quality of the fish was great and the garlic-peppercorn rub was quite scrumptious. Was it as good as the Ahi Tuna I had at the Michelin star restaurant in Hawaii? No. But it certainly beat out my own sorry attempts to recreate the dish myself. And it also comes no where near the price tag for that swanky island dinner. So all in all, it’s a wonderful, yummy fish for the value and a great way to quench your Ahi tuna craving at home. To round out a fancy, but relatively healthy dinner at home, I created a Beet Greek Yogurt Slaw recipe to go along with the Bumble Bee SuperFresh® Seared Ahi Tuna.
I was a bit surprised to learn that the Bumble Bee SuperFresh® line even existed. I solely thought of the company as a canned tuna fish brand. This new line is promoted as naturally-seasoned, restaurant quality, “fish-forward” prepared seafood solutions for the home. And with the convenience of the products all being frozen, it’s a nice way to raise the bar on cooking at home. Amazingly the Bumble Bee SuperFresh® Seared Ahi Tuna with Garlic-Peppercorn Rub is the first ever sushi quality “thaw and serve” packaged seafood product. Who knew?! It stays frozen during the processing and is never fully defrosted or re-frozen during preparation, so Bumble Bee guarantees that the quality is on par with what you expect from fine chefs at restaurants. So if you’re not planning a trip to the Hawaiian islands anytime soon and you find yourself jonesing for a bite of seared Ahi tuna, you can find Bumble Bee SuperFresh® in the frozen seafood section at your local grocery store. Check out the store locator to find it near you!
